The debut Girls Aloud album, "Sound Of The Underground," named after their debut #1 single, was released in late May 2003, following their second single, "No Good Advice," and crashed into the UK top 40 singles chart at #2, following critical acclaim hailing the group as the saviours of UK pop music. The album features other acclaimed writers and producers, in addition to Xenomania, who have carved the "Girls Aloud sound" and are responsible for all of the singles from the album, such as the Beatmasters, Betty Boo, Peters & Peters, Steve Anderson & Murlyn Music.

The first Girls Aloud single was planned to be a double-A side with their cover of East 17's "Stay Another Day," but the reaction was so strong to this edgy, electro-pop/rock stormer that the former became relegated to B-side status. "Sound Of The Underground," a fresh, ballsy single with a catchy chorus and fittingly sexy video debuted at #1, cementing their status as the true winners of "Popstars: The Rivals," selling over 200,000 in its first week.

After a few months recording their debut album, Girls Aloud returned with their second single, the precursor to the album, entitled "No Good Advice." Another Xenomania production, the self-affiming, somewhat stubborn, lyrics of the song gave it an almost anthemic feel, complete with a spoken monologue to end the track, and a striking video which saw the girls in silver suits. The single debuted at #2 in the UK top 40 singles chart, just missing out on the #1 spot,

"Life Got Cold" was never intended to be a single, and indeed was definitely not intended as a summer single (the record company had initially picked "Some Kind Of Miracle"), but because of its instant connection with fans who had bought the album, it was picked as the third Girls Aloud single. Backed by a cover of "Girls On Film," the Duran Duran classic, which the girls performed on "CD:UK," the single debuted at #3, giving them a third top 5 hit.

Again, "Some Kind Of Miracle" was pencilled in for the fourth single release from "Sound Of The Underground," but this time it was replaced by a special cover of the Pointer Sisters' "Jump," recorded especially for the soundtrack to the British movie, "Love Actually." The track debuted at #2 and became their second-biggest selling track to date, and was featured on the re-release of their debut album, as well as the follow-up, "What Will The Neighbours Say?"
